1. Which of the following is a finite set?
  • A. {2,4,6,8,...}
  • B. {1,2,3,4,...}
  • C. {...,2,3,5,7}
  • D. {3,6,9,12}
Answer: D. {3,6,9,12}
Finite sets are sets having a finite or countable number of elements. It is also known as countable sets as the elements present in them can be counted.

As you can see, its only the set {3,6,9,12} which has countable number of elements, that is 4. The rest are infinite as the set elements number end or have boundaries.
2. Given that M={a,b,c} find the number of subsets of M
  • A. 3
  • B. 4
  • C. 6
  • D. 8
Answer: D. 8
Number of subsets = 2$^{n}$, where n = number of elements.

M={a,b,c}

The number of elements in set M is 3

Number of subsets = 2$^{3}$ = 2 x 2 x 2 = 8
3. If P = {2,3,4,6,8} and Q = {1,2,3,4}, find P∩Q.
  • A. {2,3,4}
  • B. {7,9,10}
  • C. {2,3,4,6,8}
  • D. {1,2,3,4,6,8}
Answer: A. {2,3,4}
"∩" means intersection. The set of intersection are elements that can be found in both sets.

2,3 and 4 can be found in both the sets P and Q.
4. A boy bought 3 pairs of socks at GH₵17.50 per a pair and paid with two GH₵50.00 notes. How much change was he given?
  • A. GH₵27.50
  • B. GH₵37.50
  • C. GH₵47.50
  • D. GH₵48.50
Answer: C. GH₵47.50
Cost for the 3 pairs of socks = 3 x GH₵17.50 = GH₵52.5

The boy paid with two GH₵50.00 notes, hence amount given out is 2 x GH₵50.00 = GH₵100.00

Change = GH₵100.00 - GH₵52.5 = GH₵47.5
5. Find the Least Common Multiple (LCM) of the numbers 5,10 and 12.
  • A. 2 x 3 x 5
  • B. 2 x 3$^{2}$ x 5
  • C. 2$^{2}$ x 3 x 5
  • D. 2$^{2}$ x 3$^{2}$ x 5$^{2}$
Answer: C. 2$^{2}$ x 3 x 5
Step 1

Write down the prime factors

5 = 5
10 = 2 x 5
12 = 2 x 2 x 3 = 2$^{2}$ x 3

Step 2

The L.C.M is the product of each of the prime factors in their highest power.

5 = 5
2 = 2$^{2}$
3 = 3

L.C.M of 5,10 and 12 = 2$^{2}$ x 3 x 5
6. Correct 48,947.2547 to the nearest hundred.
