Sample questions with answers

1. State the property used in the operation a(b+c) = ab + ac.
  • A. Associative
  • B. Distributive
  • C. Commutative
  • D. Universal
Answer: B. Distributive
The commutative property states that we can swap numbers over and still get the same answer.

Commutative Property
1. a + b = b + a

2. a x b = b x a

The associative property states that it doesn't matter how we group the numbers (i.e. which we calculate first).

Associative Property
1. (a + b) + c = a + (b + c)

2. (a x b) x b = a x (b x c)

The distributive property states that multiplying the sum of two or more addends by a number is the same as multiplying each addend individually by the number and then adding the products together.

Distributive Property
a × (b + c) = a × b + a × c
2. Simplify 0.1 x 0.02 x 0.003 (leaving your answer in standard form)
  • A. 6x10$^{-7}$
  • B. 6x10$^{-6}$
  • C. 6x10$^{5}$
  • D. 6x10$^{6}$
Answer: B. 6x10$^{-6}$
Change the decimal to whole number x 10$^{-n}$.

Where n is the number of times you have to move the decimal point to the right to obtain a whole number.

0.1 = 0.⌒1. = 1 x 10$^{-1}$

0.02 = 0.⌒0⌒2. = 2 x 10$^{-2}$

0.003 = 0.⌒0⌒0⌒3. = 3 x 10$^{-3}$

0.1 x 0.02 x 0.003 = 1 x 10$^{-1}$ x 2 x 10$^{-2}$ x 3 x 10$^{-3}$

Law of multiplication of indices

a$^{m}$ x a$^{n}$ = a$^{m + m}$

0.1 x 0.02 x 0.003 = 1 x 2 x 3 x 10$^{-1}$ x 10$^{-2}$ x 10$^{-3}$

0.1 x 0.02 x 0.003 = 6 x 10$^{-1 + -2 + -3}$

0.1 x 0.02 x 0.003 = 6 x 10$^{-1 - 2 - 3}$

0.1 x 0.02 x 0.003 = 6 x 10$^{-6}$
3. Express $\frac{1}{25}$ as a decimal fraction.
  • A. 0.4
  • B. 0.04
  • C. 0.004
  • D. 0.0004
Answer: B. 0.04
| | 0.04 |
|---|---|
| 25 | 100 -100 00 |
4. In an examination, 25% of the candidates failed to obtain the pass mark. The number of candidates who passed was 150. How many candidates failed?
  • A. 113
  • B. 100
  • C. 50
  • D. 38
Answer: C. 50
The total percentage of the candidates is 100%

Percentage of candidates who passed = 100% - Percentage who failed

Percentage of candidates who passed = 100% - 25%
Percentage of candidates who passed = 75%

If 75% = 150

25% = $\frac{150 x 25\%}{75\%}$ = 2 x 25 = 50

Note: 75 divides itself 1 and 150, 2 times.
5. How many faces has a cube?
  • A. 8
  • B. 6
  • C. 5
  • D. 4
